Helambu Trekking

Beautiful Dorjee lakpa mountain scene from Tharepati A glimpse view of Shermathang village Tarke Gyang village below the mountain Tea house Beds in trek

Helambu is quite popular among the trekkers due to its amazing scenery and good climate. It is located about 72 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, it extends from north of Taramarang to the tree limit of the Gosainkunda Lake and lower slopes of Jugal Himal. There we meet several highland Tamang and Sherpa villages in the both sides of Malemchi Khola.

Helambu TrekkingIn Helambu trek, you can observe beautiful pine forest, slow moving rivers and swift mountain streams, rugged rock and snow-capped peaks, grassy downs and meadows strewn with daisies and wild primulas. In the upper part of the valley, there are snow bridges spanning angry torrents, high passes enveloped in mist, tiny lakes with icebergs floating on them and waters of crystalline brightness.

Helambu trek is comparatively easier due to the fact that the elevations are lower, ranging between 800m. and 3600m. It offers less climbing as well as warmer temperatures. The most important benefit of this trek is that the area is less crowded & free from noise in comparison to the Annapurna trek and some parts of the Everest treks. Besides this, the trek offers a wide range of cultures and spectacular scenes.

People & culture in Helambu Trekking

The people here of Tibetan origin and call themselves Sherpa although they are quite distinct from the Sherpas of Solukhumbu both in language and customs. Also found in large numbers here are the Tamang people who also originated in Tibet but settled in Nepal considerably earlier than the Sherpas

The best times for trekking in Langtang area are the main seasons of Autumn (September to Novemberl ) and spring (March to May ) winter is possible, especially in Helambu, higher passes may have too much snow Ganesh Himal and Ganjal are likely to be closed by snow at this time. And summer season( June to August)

Most of Lang tang Gosaikund Trek is affected by the challenging al lower elevations although up high, mountainsides and meadows explode with flowers and lush vegetation there are very few trekkers in Nepal during the Summer, making it a great time to interact with the Nepali people and experience a quieter and less busting time in Nepal

Client Reviews

I was trekking on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November 2007 together with two friends. It was wonderful getting to know rural Nepal and experiencing the enchanting scenery of the mountains. Ngima Sherpa was our trekking guide. It was his great enthusiasm that made our trip an unforgettable experience! He was reliable, perfectly organised and did far more than the necessary "guiding job": for example getting up in the early hours to run before us to secure accomodation, providing a girl we met on the trek with equipment when her shoes became broken or recommending accomodation in Karthmandu. The daily parts of the trek were well organized with enough time for breaks and to accomodate to the altitude.
