Mani Rimdu festival Trekking

Mani Rimdu festival Trekking

Mani Rimdu festival Trekking In the Everest region, Tengboche, people celebrate the festival named Mani Rimdu in the 9th Tibetan month. It usually falls in late October. It is also performed in Thame in the 4th month and in Chiwong in the 10th Tibetan month. The prayers will; be done for several days. For the villagers, the most important part comes when they receive blessing from Ringpoche and monks perform masked dance at that time. Whole village get involved this procedure and they dance until late in to the night at Tenboche. This colorful celebration is the culmination of ten days of prayers on the Buddha of compassion, Chenrezig. It is performed for the well being of all human kind.

Mani Rimdu festival TrekkingThe Mani Rimdu is Tengboche is done according to the tradition of Mindroling and came from Rongbuk monastery north of Tengboche in Tibet. The name Mani is derived from the part of chant of Chenrezing and Rimdu is the small red pills. These small red pills are blessed during the ceremony and are distributed to everyone in the end. A beautiful and intricate mandala is drawn in the beginning in fine colored sand. The sand is collected from the special place somewhere high in the mountains. It takes around four days to draw the mandala. Then it is covered and used for focus in meditation for the next ten days.

he monks perform sacred mask dance at the end of the ceremony which known as Cham. There are sixteen dances with few comic interludes to delight the crowds. These dances are said to be the establishment of recreation of Buddhism in the Himalayas by the legendary Padmashambava known as guru Rinpoche. The dances convey the teachings of Buddha from simplest truth to most profound realization. Symbolic demons are conquered, dispelled and subdued during the dancing. This symbolism also can be interpreted in many levels.

In the last day, the fire ceremony is performed by the time all people have left the venue. The monk performs this ceremony to allay all the harm in the world. Then the sand mandala is dismantled and the merit is dedicated for the benefit of all sentient beings. This tradition is continued in this remote monastery since the monastery was built first. The sacred masked dances of Mani Rimdu are performed for the Sherpa community and visitors alike.

Client Reviews

I was trekking on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November 2007 together with two friends. It was wonderful getting to know rural Nepal and experiencing the enchanting scenery of the mountains. Ngima Sherpa was our trekking guide. It was his great enthusiasm that made our trip an unforgettable experience! He was reliable, perfectly organised and did far more than the necessary "guiding job": for example getting up in the early hours to run before us to secure accomodation, providing a girl we met on the trek with equipment when her shoes became broken or recommending accomodation in Karthmandu. The daily parts of the trek were well organized with enough time for breaks and to accomodate to the altitude.
